The Populus Hotel is a visually striking and uniquely designed hotel in downtown Denver, praised for its artistic architecture and commitment to sustainability. While many guests rave about the atmosphere, exceptional service, and innovative design, some have reported limited amenities, higher-than-expected costs, and concerns regarding room size and construction views.
Custom hotels like the Populus are interesting on their own. It’s fun to spend time having a coffee and studying the design and material choices. It was comfortable and cozy and a great spot to get breakfast. I got the eggs Benedict.
We had a 20 person, 1st anniversary celebration, Happy Hour down at the Pasque. There Happy Hour was super affordable and wonderfully elegant. The staff is kind, charming, and always bent over backwards for anything we needed. Both restaurants were delicious and memorable. The hotel room was OMG, GORGEOUS, welcoming, and just perfect. We plan to do every anniversary there till we die.
Location of the hotel is great, it's near downtown and there's definitely room for it to be even greater for the amount of upgrades hopefully the city will be able to pull off. Aside from that, the amenities, staff, and offerings of the hotel are so limited. It's definitely a beautiful architectural building with many cool interior designs and features, but wow it just ends there. I stayed for a night and I'm glad I only chose a night. Also they charge you for everything, so be prepared to be paying +$120 on top of your hotel stay that's on the initial invoice. I wish they'd be transparent about it all.
Dear Traveler, I almost want to keep Populus Hotel to myself and tell you it wasn’t nearly as amazing as my family and I experienced it to be—but that wouldn’t be fair. ;) It was so special that my five-year-old asked if we could stay at least two more days. From the very beginning—booking our stay, calling the front desk to check on the weather before arrival, being warmly greeted by the team out front—the experience felt intentional and human. Walking in, with Little Owl Coffee tucked into the corner of the beautiful Populus structure, it’s impossible not to feel the care behind every detail. The building itself, designed by Jeanne Gang and the incredibly talented Studio Gang team (along with an impressive Rolodex of collaborators), is a true piece of living art in the heart of downtown Denver. As a California native who feels deeply connected to concrete jungles, I was struck by how this space pulled the best elements of San Francisco, Chicago, and New York into Denver—while still leaving room to pay tribute to Colorado, incorporating sustainability and progressive design. I can only imagine the effort, sleepless nights, and thoughtfulness that went into bringing this vision to life. Populus feels like a true community hub—from the people, to the food, to the service, to the overall vibe. We only had time to enjoy dessert, coffee, and cocktails at Pasque, but Ethan and the rest of the Pasque team made our final hours in Denver genuinely memorable and well worth it. This is a truly special place that my family and I will return to. One that my partner and I would love to enjoy for a weekend getaway to reconnect. Populus is not just a room you store your stuff in, just sleep in or shower in. Populus is a place you feel, you hang in and enjoy — With warm gratitude from way out west, Rae Vega
As I try to articulate to the public the phenomenal experience I had while we staying here I’m almost left speechless. Not only is this hotel featured in the Denver art museum but it is a Michelin key recipient. Calling The Populus a “hotel” feels like a cheap understatement. The conscientiousness behind the attention to detail, the interior design, sustainable use of reclaimed wood, ceramic glass and plate ware, are just minor details in the grand scheme of what I believe is the leading edge of what the hospitality industry needs to aspire to. As if it couldn’t get any better - Claude (the food and beverage experience manager) surpassed what we thought our definition of hospitality could be, as he guided us through the entire hotel, giving us intricate details about the build, what the Populus represents, and the vision moving forward. If you’re looking to create a unique experience, this one of one sanctuary is a must stay!
Incredible, romantic stay. Beautifully designed rooms with thoughtful details everywhere - lighting, views, amenities, all so well done. The food was excellent both upstairs and downstairs, truly memorable. Populus feels intentional, calm, and special. We loved every part of the experience and can’t wait to come back.
My room was super small, I understand there are larger rooms. For business it was tough as there is no desk in room. My only other issue was lighting at sink vanity was not good for a girl to put makeup on in morning. Otherwise the room is great, wonderful linens, comfortable bed and climate control. The pitcher and glasses for water from water station were useful. Loved the cat hammock window to sit in with great view of city. Also they have a great bar, the bartenders are super personable and made amazing cocktails. Coffee bar is good, had a good breakfast. Can say we didn't have dinner in downstairs restaurant, the menu didn't appeal to everyone in the group I was with. They really need to add a burger to menu, cause every restaurant needs one.
Several months ago, my then Fiancé and I began our journey of planning our Micro wedding. One of our first spots to check out was the Populous hotel. We scheduled a meeting with their staff and worked with Allison. Our first impression of the hotel was love at first sight. The styling, the colors, the location… it all spoke to us. This was just based on our time in the lobby, but it was already looking good. We arrived early and got a coffee and checked out Pasque the first-floor dining/bar option. All really nice. Our plan was to look at their meeting room spaces on the 2nd floor as we weren’t exactly sure on the size of our wedding. The rooms were all very nice and styled well. I love the window shaped and all the unique qualities this hotel offers. Unfortunately, there is a lot of construction next door and all the rooms we would see having a small ceremony in just had pretty unfortunate views of scaffolding across the street (which is obviously not their fault). At this point we met up with Allison and she took us to the roof to check out the restaurant, Stellar Jay. We were not prepared for this space. The décor, the smells from the wood fire, the bar, the staff, the balcony… honestly you name it… was all amazing. The hotel overlooks the park and capital, and we were now above the construction, so the views were perfect. My fiancé was almost in tears after seeing the balcony. We got some drinks and chatted with the staff working the bar. They were all so friendly and amazing, we were sold. Several days later we received our contract which was honestly extremely reasonable. The very next day we saw the hotel featured in Esquire magazine… we quickly agreed it was time to lock things in and get to planning. Over the next several months we ate at Stellar Jay a few times, we shared many emails and planning sessions with Allison, and we soon had locked into a plan for our 20 person wedding. The food at the restaurant was fantastic. The wood fire cooking just left such an amazing take on the vegetables. The meat was obviously the star but their veg is shockingly and unexpectedly fantastic. When we had our tasting Allison and the staff there were beyond generous. We tried all of their wine/champagne offered by the glass and nearly everything on the menu. The lead chef for the evening came to our table at each course to talk about the food. He seemed genuinely invested in our wedding and our love of food in a way we were not prepared for. His passion for the work was clear, and the food showed it off completely. One of his peers came out to explain dishes they may have in the future. He brought out a small bowl of congee for us to try which really spoke to some of my Fiancé’s culture. He then went on to discuss the fish, how he was planning to prepare it, his sides, etc. It was as if the hotel had cliff’s notes on exactly what we wanted to hear. Their pastry chef had a plan for a most amazing and beautiful strawberry shortcake for our desert along with their amazing cookies and a Flour-less cake. This is just one example of how Allison and the team at Populous made a forever memory for us. Honestly the waiters we had, the bartenders, the hotel staff were all just so thoughtful and supportive. I can’t say enough good on how special they made this all. If you are considering a stay in Denver for the weekend, just a nice dinner for a date night, or a full-blown wedding. Do yourself a favor and check this place out. I really cannot gush enough about how perfect the populous is.
We were part of a large insurance group that had the wonderful opportunity to experience the Populus! Everything about the facility, the staff, the service is fantastic! Our table was the first one at the entrance to the bar area, and we were treated as though we were in a five star restaurant! The table cleared after each course with fresh settings! Service is impeccable, and our meal delicious!! Chef de cuisine is superior! Thank to all that made our stay beautiful!
We loved our stay at Populus! This is a gorgeous, modern hotel in a great location. We stayed in a standard King with our small dog, which was admittedly a bit cozy, but it was very comfortable. I really appreciated that there were bowls with a plastic mat, and a dog bed in the room, along with a personalized card recommending dog friendly places to go in Denver! The roof top bar is a must for stunning views and a delicious drink, and Little Owl cafe has tasty coffee and excellent pastries! All of the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful-- If we ever return to Denver, we know where we'll be staying!
